My Review: While this isn’t a book, this is certainly something that can and will enhance your Bible reading/studying time. Along with adult coloring books, there is currently a rising trend for Bible journaling and this kit is an excellent purchase for anyone looking to get started down that path. I love that the pencils never need sharpening, and while I never had breakage issues my wife (who has used these far more than I have!) cautions that the pencils are prone to breaking. Also, depending on the Bible you are using you may be able to see the pen on the other side of the page. While this may bother some people, as a highlighter of my own Bible I am used to seeing a little hint of what has been done on the other side of the page so it never bothered me. The pen itself doesn’t bleed through to other pages, and writes very well.

The pouch itself is one of the best parts of this whole kit, and is a permanent fixture with my wife’s Bible and other Bible-time items. The one part of the kit that kind of fell flat was the stickers because they simply weren’t of interest to us. We’d rather write and color in the Bible than spell out words with letter stickers. But others may love the stickers and, at the least, anyone with small kids can find plenty of uses for those even if they don’t want to use them in the Bible. On the other hand, we did keep the tab stickers as those were an excellent idea for marking pages that hold some of our favorite passages for an easy way to find them again.

As a whole this was a great kit and definitely worth the investment. If you, or a loved one, has an interest in Bible journaling this is is a great product to have and would make a great Christmas gift.

Title: The Blessings of Unity: God’s Best for Our Marriages

Author: Richard T. Case

Published by: Elevate Faith on 9/15/2015

138 Pages (Paperback)

Blurb:

Many movements in today’s society have combined to create an atmosphere that at best teaches married couples very little about how to find happiness together, and at worst threatens to destroy the sanctity with which God intends his children to approach that union. Self-centeredness and misinformation have led many away from walking in the Spirit and loving their spouses in Christlike ways, disqualifying them from the blessings that God has in store for his unified children. The Blessings of Unity offers insight and ideas for creating godly unity in our marriages centered around two key concepts:

      1) Abiding in the Vine and walking in the Spirit, and

    2) Learning and applying the concept of unity.

Unity is achieved when a man and woman strive for agreement with God by processing His Will on every decision and in every issue. Through Biblically-centered discussions of discord, division, unity, discipleship, and prayer, and through exploring Biblical examples of unity, Richard Case offers husbands and wives practical and spiritual advice for working together in unity in the Spirit so that they can more perfectly present themselves to God for his divine approval.

My Take: This was a difficult book for me to gauge. The writing throughout most of the book was difficult to read, taking more of a sermonistic tone than the conversational and personal tone that is common in Christian non-fiction these days. There is some excellent information passed along, both on disunity and how getting into unity with your spouse can bring about those blessings. There are some solid portions of Scripture to accompany Case’s message, along with some early examples from his own life and marriage.

There is a heavy focus in here of not only being in unity with your spouse, but also of abiding in the Vine. My personal favorite chapter, and the one where I took away the most helpful information, came from the fifth chapter: Unity Comes Through Abiding in the Word. One suggestion was for each spouse to do their own Bible studies, reading and diving in where the Spirit is leading each person rather than tethering each other to the same passages. After all, even in our own marriage we may need different things at different times. The unity comes in with having a regular time to come together and read and compare the notes as a couple and see if there are any things that the other spouse might pick up on in those passages studied the previous week. I love this idea and, once I secure a journaling Bible for my wife, this is something I hope to put into practice in my own home.

Overall this was a fine book and a short read. Books on marriage have never really been something I’ve sought out to read because I feel I have a strong bond with my wife already. But for those who feel the need to strengthen that relationship to form a more unified bond, the information in this book can certainly prove helpful.

Title: Say & Pray Devotions: First Words, Stories, and Prayers

Author: Diane Stortz

Illustrated by: Sarah Ward

Published by: Thomas Nelson (October 11, 2016)

Pages: 40 (Board Book)

Blurb: Say and Pray devotions with your little ones today!

Your youngsters want to be just like you. How exciting! Help them grow in their faith and learn more about God’s love with Say & Pray Devotions.

Say & Pray Devotions features short devotions and lots of labeled illustrations so your little one can practice identifying objects and words on their own! This book is a great tool to start a devotional time with little ones, as it will help you teach them about God, and the labeled pictures will help start a life of faith.

This is a nice complement to the bestselling Say & Pray Bible.

My Take: There is so much to love and enjoy about this book. The pictures throughout are colorful and engaging. While my little one is currently too young to focus much on the images in the book, I am excited that this book will become even more valuable when he gets to the stage where we can point to the pictures and read the words identifying some of the images on the page.

Each pair of pages forms a small devotional to read, whether about the morning or night, about pets, about grandparents, and many other simple yet important topics. Each one of these devotionals has a short sentence about that topic, a small Bible verse to recite and/or memorize, and a simple prayer to pray related to the topic. And, as mentioned before, there are about 6-8 images one the pages that have words labeling them to point and read as well. All of this works out to a nice, short devotional to use with little ones of all ages. I can usually do 2-3 of these with my 4-month-old before he starts to get too squirmy, and I like having so many options to choose from that can tie in with parts of his day.

I would definitely recommend adding this book to your collection for little ones. This is a book that they can grow into, and still could get use as they are learning to read words and will give them short and simple verses to memorize. I have a feeling that this book will eventually get worn from use in our house!

Be sure to enter the giveaway listed at the very bottom of this post for a chance to win your own copy of this book. The giveaway will end on 11/13/2016 so enter now and spread the word!
