Challenging situations, provocative theories and fantastic characters will tease you on. Expect the unexpected and to be confronted with other ways of thinking, seeing and being as the incredible becomes the credible and then back again, and time, place and characters take on new dimensions and realities. Effortlessly interwoven sub-plots subtly build behind the story, giving the tale depth and intrigue. The Augmented Reality illustrations give this book a unique visual and audio element, adding to the many ways November Fox and her cast of real and bizarre characters will challenge you. *****

‘She paused for a moment as the mood in the room went quickly from a light-hearted cake break to being as deep and reflective as a moonlit lake at midnight.’ This excerpt from the book describes this idiosyncratic fantasy chronicle perfectly. It’s a journey through the fantastical and is not just escapist but reflects the real world though departing from it. On November’s adventure, the reader gets to re-examine their conceptions of time and space and leave behind ‘real world’ mundanity. In that departure, we are shown that reality has more fantastical elements than first realised. November Fox is a stream of consciousness narrative which renders a flow of myriad impressions… visual, auditory, physical, associative and subliminal. The writer incorporates snatches of incoherent thought and free association of ideas, images, and words to capture the total flow of their characters’ consciousness. A promising narrative with a truly innovative digital experience, one can look forward to the next in the series. – Di Ebert

*****

From the first page it pulls you in with the phrase that decorates the back cover, “Things aren’t always as they seem, do we wake or do we dream?…” and the reader is introduced to the mysterious Architect who is to become an integral part and narrator of November Fox. As well as providing the reader with a curious plot and interesting characters, author E.E. Bertram has created this book to have an augmented reality: an additional component to the book accessed using an app that you download onto your phone or table. Scanning the pictures that accompany the chapter then activates this. Using this method the reader discovers a beautiful animated video paired with the chapter that is described as ‘taking a critical look at current events’ and follows a mysterious figure on a journey towards ‘inner peace”. November Fox is a refreshing, different book reminiscent of the curiosities of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. It is an interesting read and one that sticks in your head long after you’ve finished reading it. – Sussex Life Magazine

November Fox – Book 1. Following Joy

A Metaphysical Visionary Fable

By. E.E. Bertram

Introduction

Things aren’t always as they seem, do we wake or do we dream? Are we dreaming life or living the dream?

The answer may be we do both.

*****

A letter from me, to you. The dawn is near. How delightful. This being my first ever letter, I must apologise, as it may be on the long side as far as letters are concerned. My Father always said, if you are going to do something, do it properly, or not at all. They call me The Architect. I am much more accustomed to construction and landscaping, which is worlds away from writing language on a page. Although of late, I seem to be doing far more observing than designing.

Never could I have imagined I would become an observer and a letter-writer. Funny thing, life; how it sneaks up on you like that. Your World of Form fascinates me so—curious, busy people, always doing, doing, doing.

I must admit that I tend to be the same myself, although in a different way, as you will come to witness. Perhaps you and I shared some things in common? (It is, of course, no coincidence that you found my message.) I sense that you have spent some tick-tocks, or at least a few moments, wondering who you are? What is this life all about? How did we get here? Where are we going? I myself cannot give you any fixed answers to these questions, yet I can perhaps share with you another perspective on this wondrous ride we call life. My observations of one fascinating young lady—who you will soon know as November Fox—may also shed some light. In writing you this letter, I intend to show you a glimpse behind the curtain. This is a world not seen by anyone in your sphere, until now.

Before we get started, I must say I am rather joyous to meet you here, in this peculiar part of the universe. This invisible space; the distance of approximately 46cm or 18 inches that the black letters of these words travel to your eyes, which then absorb, filter, and process them. Yes, this is indeed a rather fascinating location, out of all the possible places to connect. This unique space is one where we can both float free in a dialogue of sorts, sharing this moment.

Although perhaps reading this, you may think I existed in the past, writing this letter?

Maybe you believe you are here, now, alone, scanning words I left behind for you to find? Is this the case? Let me say that the universe is far more mysterious than you have ever imagined. Are you open to the possibility that it may only be you travelling down linear tick-tock? I do hope so, because the truth is, I float here with you in this moment. Hello, (insert me shaking your hand and smiling,) I am delighted to make your acquaintance in this curious part of the cosmos.

My Father always called me a dreamer He was right about that. Dreamers are also important; I realise that now. As a young Architect, I spent any spare moment I could, stretched out across my magic flying carpet, Charlie, staring into the heavens and wondering how everything came into being. I shall tell you more about Charlie a little bit later. I still wonder why my Father displayed a notably more negative tone than his default persecutory edge when he called me a dreamer. Perhaps dreams and those bestowed with the job to explore them, are not so simple to understand; perhaps even frightening? I am rather sure, as one of the ones with my head in another dimension, that it is not always easy to be a dreamer. You will need to trust me on that, unless you are a dreamer yourself. Are you?

Oscar Wilde, the fine chap he is (or perhaps was, from your perspective), once said, A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world. How true that is, and how punished I have been because of my dreaming. I say this with heartfelt sincerity; life can be a double-edged sword of tranquillity and loneliness, when living in the solitude of shadows. Yet I am not writing to dwell on such dark affairs. Today the precious dawn is soon to arrive, and I just cannot contain my excitement anymore. I can sense change in my bones; although, to be clear, I carry no skeletons as such. My TMD machine (I will also explain him later) is doing his utmost to translate, and “Bones” is the best the poor fellow could come up with. Anyway, the sun is near, my dear friend! So let this letterwriting business commence.

Have you ever had an exceptionally strong sense of something or a gigantic idea? One so immense that you are unsure your small body or mind can contain the complex monstrosity. You feel you may crack open when you allow it to push your edges too far. Well, the moment is here to let you in on my little secret.

THE FIRST MARTIAN CHURCH OF GOD

David Wiley

“Did you hear the big news,” Smith asked Spender, “about how the NASA Colonization team discovered life on Mars?”

Spender stopped stirring his coffee, the black stick swirling in concentric circles on its own through the cloudy concoction. He set the cup down and licked his lips. His brown eyes glistened under the solar fluorescent lighting. “It was a matter of time before they either found the Martians or declared that Mars was truly devoid of life,” Spender answered, smiling. “What do they look like? The Martians, I mean.”

Smith grunted and shook his head. “That all depends on which channel you listen to. CNN4.0 says they look just like us and that we should begin an immigration program immediately to integrate some of them among our borders.”

“That would be their style,” Spender sighed.

“And Fox News2.7 has flashed pictures clearly taken from old Science Fiction television shows. Since most of today’s youth hasn’t seen those classics like Farscape and Star Trek, they are taken in by the images.”

“In other words, no one knows for sure?”

“That’d be my guess,” Smith said. He took a long pull of his coffee and Spender finished preparing his own drink. They drank in silence, sinking into plush ultravelvet chairs. An occasional hem or a hum cut through the silence like a subtle knife.

“Do you realize what this means?” Spender ventured at last. Smith looked over at him with raised eyebrows but said nothing. “It means that we need to have a meeting with our Missions team.”

“Don’t be stupid,” Smith said. “Do you really think that they are going to want to send us out to Mars as Missionaries?”

“I bet many churches are going to be having that discussion,” Spender said. “I would guess that the Catholics and the Baptists and all the others are going to want to be the first to plant a church on Mars. We should want to do the same.”

“We don’t even know anything for sure,” Smith answered. “For all we know the Martians could be hostile. Could speak a telekinetic language that we’ll never understand. Might have been a hallucination of the team. They probably already have their own religion.”

“But think of the possibilities, Jonah. We’ve spread the Word of God to every tribe and every nation on the earth now. Many of us believed that Christ would return when that happened and we’re still waiting. That must mean there is another nation needing the Gospel. What if the Martians are that nation?”

Smith harrumphed and rose from his chair. He paused in the doorway, not looking back at Spender. “Even if you are right, by the time you get the funds to fly out there and plant a church there will be dozens of others already there.” Then, he walked away.

In 2033, two years after the first Martian sighting took place, construction of the first church on Mars began. The Catholics had pooled together resources in order to fund the construction of a special shuttle designed to carry a dozen of their most devout and fervent missionaries into space. The news stations around the world unanimously heralded it as one of the most important moments in the history of the Catholic Church and the ground-breaking session was livestreamed to everyone’s telecast screen. The event brought a vibrancy and relevance to the Catholic Church that hadn’t been seen since the Middle Ages. Pope Imperius I enjoyed a surge in numbers, both congregational and financial, for months as the progress was regularly updated to the citizens around the globe.

No one expected the disaster to strike. A massive dust storm swept through the area as construction neared its climax, obstructing the view of every visual recording device and deafening the sound recorders. The storm raged for three weeks straight, abating on the day when the final reveal of the church was to take place. When the video came through at last, all that remained of the Catholic Church building was a pile of reddish rubble. Nothing more was heard from the expedition team. And the number of Catholics plummeted below where it had been prior to the expedition.

“Did you hear that they are making a portable machine capable of terraforming a patch of Mars?” Smith asked. He resumed his task of picking soggy bits of apple from his teeth with a fingernail.

“Are they now?” Spender asked with raised eyebrows. “What would be the benefit of such a device?”

Smith inspected a rather long sliver of apple, shrugged, and stuck it back into his mouth. “Apparently it would make that patch of land like the Earth.”

“What part of the Earth?”

“Hell if I know. The best part of it?”

“Well who decides what the best part is? Are we talking the jungles of the Amazon or the deserts of Egypt?” Spender set down the book he was reading.

“What does it matter, Spender? It isn’t like either one of us is going to be affected by it. They are certain this terraforming will prevent the same disaster from striking a second time. Word is that the Lutherans are going to be launching next.”

“No one else is planning on sending out a church planting team?”

“Not yet, and who can blame them?” Smith took a long pull from his coffee cup. Spender shook his head as half of it dribbled down Smith’s chin and clung to his unkempt beard. “After the failure of the Catholic mission no one was in a real hurry to be the second.”

“And then if this one fails, is that it? The Martians will be given up as unreachable?”

“Shit Spender,” Smith said. “You still got a thing for reaching these Martians, huh?”

“Someone needs to burn with a fire to reach the lost. God’s laws are written on the heart of every being on Earth. Why wouldn’t it be the same on Mars?”

“For all we know these Martians are little more than animals. I mean, we haven’t found a single building with all of our scans and satellite images for years.”

Spender was silent, thoughtful. After a while Smith got up and left the room, shaking his head and cursing under his breath. Spender began to pray.

Book Re-Release: The Ancient One by T.A. Barron

Book Release, Crimson Edge Press, Fantasy, J.C. Boyd, Strong Armed, T.A. Barron, The Ancient One

It is Tuesday, and that means some excellent new books are being released to the market today. I pre-ordered one book that just came out, Strong Armed by J.C. Boyd and published by Crimson Edge Press. I am super-excited to dive into that book and be sure to check out the Facebook Takeovers that will be happening throughout the day to celebrate that worthy release.

I was also blessed to get a review copy about a week ago of T.A. Barron’s The Ancient One and am currently working my way through it and enjoying it. I have a lot of respect for children’s fantasy featuring strong, complex female heroines so I couldn’t pass it up. Especially after reading and enjoying the first two books of Barron’s Atlantis series (reviews for those are here and here).

Later this week I will be featuring a post about strong, heroic female characters so look forward to that, as well as a review once I finish The Ancient One.

CLASSIC CHILDREN’S FANTASY, THE ANCIENT ONE BY T.A. BARRON, SOON TO BE RELEASED WITH NEW COVER AND AUTHOR INTRO

On March 8, 2016, Puffin Books will re-issue T.A. Barron’s classic fantasy adventure, THE ANCIENT ONE. Originally published in 1992, the book follows teenager Kate Gordon as she finds herself caught in a battle over the fate of a pristine forest that’s been discovered on a sacred Native American site rich in mystery and magic. Slipping into the hollow of an ancient redwood tree, Kate finds herself transported back 500 years to an enchanted time – and into a gripping adventure that will affect both past and future.

More than two decades after its original release, THE ANCIENT ONE still resonates with readers as it tackles big issues like environmentalism, courage, corporate greed, and unemployment. The Huffington Post lists THE ANCIENT ONE among the “9 Best Trees in Literature” and a current review on Goodreads said the book “is full of ancient magic and connection to nature, along with plenty of humor. T. A. Barron wrote a masterpiece, truly capturing my heart.”

In his introduction, T.A. Barron sheds light on the book’s genesis 25 years ago and writes, “What few people know is that THE ANCIENT ONE was inspired by a hike in California when I encountered the most magnificent tree I’d ever seen—a redwood of such grandeur that I nearly fell over backward trying to see its highest boughs. I lingered in that grove for the rest of the day. But at sunset, I still wasn’t ready to leave. Though I hadn’t expected to camp out, and hadn’t brought a sleeping bag or food, I decided to stay for the night. Whether or not I slept that night, I don’t remember. But I do remember feeling an extraordinary sense of peace. And I also remember wondering, all through the dark hours, what amazing stories this two-thousand-year-old tree could tell, what rich wisdom it could share.”

Weaving Native American lore within a fantasy setting, THE ANCIENT ONE was also unique in that it was among the few adventure books at the time that featured a girl as its protagonist.

“Today, we take for granted that young girls can be the hero of an adventure story, but when THE ANCIENT ONE was published, that wasn’t often the case,” said Barron. “I’m proud of the positive influence the book has had on a generation of young people, especially girls, and I hope that continues for generations to come.”

  1. T.A. Barron is the award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of the Merlin Saga, which has sold millions of copies worldwide and was recently optioned for a major motion picture by Disney. He is the winner of the 2011 de Grummond Medallion for “lifetime contribution to the field of children’s and young adult literature.” A long-time advocate of the power of youth, Barron writes about fictional young heroes in his novels, but champions inspiring young people in real life. He founded the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes, which honors outstanding young leaders who have made a significant impact on their communities and the environment. He lives in Colorado with his family. For more information, please visit www.tabarron.com.
